Saturday at the Fat Olive Restaurant, Muldersdrift

My boyfriend and I recently decided that we had had enough of eating in suburban Jo'burg restaurants and wanted to venture into the countryside away from all the hustle and bustle. So we decided to experiment with various country restaurants and our first port of call was The Fat Olive in Mulderdrift.

After a short drive from Craighall, we arrived to discover a pretty and unpretentious venue, which looked like someone's old farmhouse nestled in the undulating hills of the Cradle of Humankind. Even though the seating was pretty ordinary i.e. garden furniture, the surroundings were serene and laid-back!

A blackboard menu placed in front of us listed all the wonderful items available. The starters really took our fancy and so we decided to go through the entire list and forget about the mains.

Escargots baked in Wine, Garlic, sundried tomato and Gorgonzola
Aged Brie wrapped in Phillo Pastry, with Strawberry and Hazelnut Fried Halumi
Falkland Island Calamari tubes
Chicken Spring Rolls

We highly recommend all of the above.

Just to finish off we have to say that the service was great, the ambience lovely and the prices very reasonable. The entire experience was very pleasant. We will definitely return to try out the rest of the menu!

Look out for our next country restaurant experience!
